Rona Popal

Co-founder & Executive Director of Afghan Coalition

Rona Popal is a prominent advocate for Afghan women’s rights and a recognized community leader. She co-founded the Afghan Coalition in 1996 with Dr. Waheed Momand to empower Afghan women and families in Southern Alameda County, home to the largest Afghan refugee community in the U.S. She also established the Afghan Women’s Association International (AWAI) in 1992 to champion human rights for Afghan women globally.

Rona was celebrated as the Woman of the Year and honored on March 20 as the 2023 California Woman Making HERstory, recognizing her impactful work and dedication. Her leadership is laser-focused on supporting Afghan clients and empowering staff to reach their fullest potential.

Rona moved to the U.S. in 1977, where she spent 15 years as a social worker and activist helping Afghan refugees. She has represented the Northern California Afghan community at international conferences and served as the Northwest U.S. delegate to the Loya Jirga (Grand Council). Rona holds a BA in Political Science and International Relations from Cal State East Bay.
